A game master is chosen who shuffles all the cards well. Then he distributes 6 cards to each player, which are placed face up upon receipt. The rest of the cards are given to the game master, who piles them face down in front of him.
The first player takes one of his blue- or red-printed tiles, calls out the name, and exchanges it with the game master for a blue pin for a blue-printed card, or a red marker for a red-printed card. The needle is placed at the beginning of the river identified by the map, while the red marker is placed at the location indicated by the map.
In turn, the players continue with one card each. It should be noted that the blue-printed cards with rivers and the red-printed ones with cities that are on the Rhine can be used without further ado, while for the black-printed cards with cities that are on tributaries of the Rhine, you only then get a black marker, which is then placed on the relevant location if the river on which the city is located is already pinned by a blue pin.
Whoever gets rid of their cards first wins.
